Thought Du Jour

"The mind is sharper and keener in seclusion and uninterrupted solitude. No big laboratory is needed in which to think. Originality thrives in seclusion free of outside influences beating upon us to cripple the creative mind. Be alone, that is the secret of invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born. That is why many of the earthly miracles have had their genesis in humble surroundings."

— Tesla

Keep up with the shower thoughts, people!

I disagree. Although I would agree that being around just anybody can cripple creativity, I find my ideas are strengthened by the company of other, like minded persons. Left to my own devices I tend to either give up on my concepts half-way through or phone it in at the end because I've grown bored. Being able to compare, contrast and co-relate only produces better work in the end.

Good point. I do enjoy those kind of interactions for idea-making as well. It's somewhat like an energy exchange which at the end leaves everyone feeling great.

At the time of the post, I just can't help but think back on all of those days obsessing over other artist's work, and how hard it is to be able to shake off influences and (cultural?) upbringings.

Artists have always drawn inspiration from two sources: nature and other artists. Influence in either case is unavoidable.

You forgot about being under the influence too for the third source. (drugs, alcohol, opium, etc) =P
